India has fully operationalised its landmark 2,843-km Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) network, marking a major milestone in the India logistics and industrial infrastructure.   • With this, India’s two operational DFCs now cover 2,843 km and carry around 426 freight trains daily.

1. Western DFC (WDFC)

  • Length: 1,506 km

    • JNPT

  • Major northern destinations include Tughlakabad, Dadri, Dhandari Kalan and Khatuwas.

2. Eastern DFC (EDFC)

  • Length: 1,337 km
  • Route: Ludhiana → Sonnagar
  • Primarily handles coal and mineral traffic from eastern India.
  • Fully commissioned in October 2023.
  • Includes:
    • 936-km double-line section: Sonnagar–Dadri
    • 401-km single-line section: Ludhiana–Khurja

Why Were DFCs Needed?

Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs) were developed to separate heavy freight trains from passenger services, reduce congestion on busy railway routes, and lower the overall cost of transporting goods. By providing dedicated rail infrastructure for freight movement, DFCs improve operational efficiency, reduce transit times, and strengthen India’s logistics network.

  • Traditional Howrah–Delhi and Mumbai–Delhi routes became heavily congested.
  • Line utilisation had reached around 115–150%.
  • This restricted freight movement and reduced railway efficiency.

Key Benefits

1. Faster Freight Movement

  • Average freight speed on DFCs is over 50 kmph.
  • This is roughly twice the average speed of freight trains on the conventional network.
  • Recent speeds:
    • WDFC: 53.6 kmph in April and 52.3 kmph in May
    • EDFC: 44.9 kmph in April and 44.7 kmph in May

2. Lower Logistics Costs

  • Faster movement reduces:
    • Transit time
    • Fuel and operational costs
    • Inventory holding costs
  • This can improve the competitiveness of Indian manufacturing and exports.

3. Last-Mile Connectivity

  • DFCs provide improved connectivity between ports, industrial centres and inland container depots (ICDs).

4. Higher Freight Capacity

  • Around 426 freight trains currently operate daily on the two corridors.
  • Dedicated infrastructure allows more freight to move without competing with passenger trains for track capacity.

Significance for Indian Railways

  • Freight revenue is critical for Indian Railways and helps subsidise passenger services.
  • Freight contributes over 65% of total railway earnings.
  • Rail currently carries around 27% of freight traffic.
  • The National Rail Plan aims to raise rail’s freight share to 45% by 2030, equivalent to around 3,000 million tonnes.
  • Indian Railways recorded its highest-ever loading of 1,670 million tonnes in 2025–26.

  • The DFC project was first discussed during a Japan-India meeting in 2005.
  • A feasibility study was prepared in 2007.
  • Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Ltd. (DFCCIL) was established as the SPV for construction, operation and maintenance.
  • Financing included:
    • World Bank: ₹14,900 crore
    • Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA): ₹38,722 crore
    • Remaining funding through budgetary support

Proposed Third DFC

  • The government has announced a proposed third Dedicated Freight Corridor.
  • It will connect Dankuni (West Bengal) to Surat (Gujarat).
  • The Detailed Project Report (DPR) is under preparation.
