What is the UPSC Civil Services Aptitude Test?
The Civil Services Aptitude Test, commonly called CSAT, is General Studies Paper II of UPSC Prelims. It evaluates comprehension, reasoning, analytical ability, decision-making, problem-solving, general mental ability, basic numeracy and data interpretation. Its purpose is to test aptitude required for public-service responsibilities rather than specialised academic knowledge.
CSAT is qualifying: its marks are not added to the score used for the Prelims cut-off. However, it is compulsory, and a candidate must secure the qualifying score and appear in both Prelims papers.

The syllabus combines language comprehension, reasoning and Class X-level numerical ability.
- Comprehension: reading passages, central idea, inference, assumptions, tone and arguments.
- Interpersonal skills: communication and understanding of social or workplace situations.
- Logical reasoning: analogies, classification, series, syllogisms, coding, relations, directions and arrangements.
- Analytical ability: identifying patterns, evaluating conditions and drawing valid conclusions.
- Decision-making: situational judgement, problem-solving and administrative aptitude.
- General mental ability: number and letter series, sequences, logical patterns and basic aptitude.
- Basic numeracy: numbers, percentages, ratios, averages, profit and loss, time and work, speed and distance, algebra, geometry and mensuration at Class X level.
- Data interpretation: charts, graphs, tables and data sufficiency at Class X level.
Minimum requirement
UPSC CSAT 2026 Qualifying Marks
Candidates must obtain at least 33% of 200 marks. This equals 66 marks. The target should not be exactly 66: performance can vary by paper difficulty, question selection and avoidable negative marks, so preparation should aim for a reasonable safety margin.
Each question generally carries 2.5 marks. Under the one-third negative-marking rule, an incorrect response attracts a deduction of approximately 0.83 marks. No penalty is applied to an unattempted question.
