Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India, established in 2010 in Mumbai under TRAI recommendations and Ministry of Information & Broadcasting guidelines, is a private organization responsible for providing accurate and transparent television audience measurement across India.

Broadcast Audience Research Council(BARC)

The Broadcast Audience Research Council India is a private body that measures television viewership in India using a panel of over 55,000+ households. It calculates Television Rating Points weekly using audio watermarking technology and ‘BAR-O-meters’ to track and analyse what millions of viewers are watching and liking. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting recently asked the Broadcast Audience Research Council to suspend reporting of Television Rating Points for TV news channels for four weeks. This has been done keeping in mind the curbing of sensational Iran-Israel war related news.

What is the Broadcast Audience Research Council in India?

The Broadcast Audience Research Council India is a private body established in 2010 in Mumbai that manages an accurate TV audience measurement. It is responsible for tracking TRPs weekly. As the only entity for television ratings in India, it represents broadcasters, advertisers and agencies to provide data for over 210 million TV households. Let’s take a look at the details of the Broadcast Audience Research Council.

1. Purpose

Broadcast Audience Research Council measures TV viewing habits of Indian households to help advertisers and broadcasters make relevant content and influence media spend decisions. TRPs determine what type of content is being valued and appreciated by people.

2. Structure

The private body is founded by stakeholders such as the Indian Broadcasting & Digital Foundation, Indian Society of Advertisers and Advertising Agencies Association of India. Together, they carry out the smooth function and analysis of what audiences are preferring to watch.

3. Methodology

Broadcast Audience Research Council uses Audio Watermarking Technology to detect channel viewership across platforms like cable, DTH and satellite. It also uses BAR-O-meters to track TV viewership habits of Indian households.

4. Governance

Broadcast Audience Research Council operates under guidelines from the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. Currently, Gaurav Banerjee is the elected chairman from 2025.

Why has the Broadcast Audience Research Council Suspended TRPs for TV News Channels?

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting directed the Broadcast Audience Research Council to suspend TV news TRP ratings for four weeks. The suspension started from early March 2026 due to concerns over sensationalism and risky content in reporting the Israel-Iran war. This suspension aims to curb panic evoking irresponsible journalism which can create unnecessary worry in people. The government believes the chase for TRP ratings encourages the news channels to show exaggerated content during sensitive international crises. The government also observed that some news channels were broadcasting sensitive war coverage which could cause panic among the public, particularly those with connections in the war affected regions. The directive for suspension was issued under the Policy Guidelines for Television Rating Agencies in India.

What is Television Rating Point?

Television Rating Point is a very important metric generated by BARC that measures the popularity and viewership percentage of TV programs. The calculation is done using devices like BAR-O-meters in sample households. Television Rating Point determines which shows attract the largest audiences. High TRPs drive advertising revenue and highlight content success. It also showcases the percentage of target viewers watching a specific channel or program over a set time every week. In India, BARC installs BAR-O-meters in over 45,000 households to record data on viewing duration and demographics.

How Do TRP Ratings Work?

TRP ratings measure the popularity of TV shows by tracking the viewing habits of a sample set of households weekly. In India, BARC uses BAR-O-meters attached to TVs in selected homes to record data. This device tracks what type of content is being watched and for how long. This information helps advertisers determine the ad rates. Let’s understand how TRP ratings work.

Data Collection

Devices like People’s Meters or BAR-O-meters are installed in selected sample 45,000 households to track relevant information on what type of content is being watched and for how much duration. BARC releases this data on a weekly basis.

Sample Collection

BARC India uses a two-stage process which includes the survey of thousands of households to select sample homes. After 45,00 homes are shortlisted for the data collection, devices are installed for data collection purposes.

Calculation

The formula of calculating TRP involves the number of total target audience divided by the sample size, multiplied by 100. BARC provides all of these numbers after careful analysis of time and target segment wise viewership in thousands.

Conclusion

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has recently asked the Broadcast Audience Research Council to temporarily suspend the reporting of TRPs for TV news channels for four weeks. This has been done keeping in mind the prevention of sensational Iran-Israel war related news. Many news channels were displaying sensitive war related content which was causing panic in the public and it has been observed that news channels show exaggerated news to gain more TRPs. The suspension can be extended depending on the longevity of the war situation.
