MALABAR EXERCISE 2024
On
October 9, 2024, India hosted the
Malabar 2024 exercise in
Visakhapatnam, involving naval forces from
Australia, Japan, and the
United States.
This exercise focuses on enhancing
combat readiness, maritime integration, and
interoperability among the participating nations.
BACKGROUND OF EXERCISE MALABAR
- Initiation: The Malabar exercise began in 1992 as a bilateral exercise between the United States and India.
- Evolution: Over the years, it has evolved to include Japan and Australia, with this year marking the 28th iteration of the exercise.
- Participation: This year is the fifth time that all four nations are participating, emphasizing collective planning and advanced warfare tactics.
OBJECTIVES OF MALABAR 2024
- Maritime Security: Strengthening maritime security and cooperation among like-minded nations in the Indo-Pacific region.
- Operational Synergy: Enhancing operational synergy and promoting stronger ties among the participating navies.
- Deterring Conflict: Reinforcing commitments to a free and open Indo-Pacific, contributing to regional stability.
KEY PARTICIPANTS & ASSETS
- S. Forces:
- USS Dewey (DDG 105): An Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer.
- P-8 Poseidon: A maritime patrol aircraft from Commander, Task Force 72.
- Japanese Forces:
- JS Ariake (DD 109): A Murasame-class destroyer representing the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.
- Australian Forces:
- HMAS Stuart (FFH 153): An Anzac-class frigate.
- P-8A Poseidon: A maritime patrol aircraft from the Royal Australian Air Force.
- Indian Forces:
- INS Delhi (D 61): The first-in-class guided-missile destroyer, accompanied by at least four other surface combatants and aircraft.

- Indo-Pacific Stability: The exercise serves as a significant platform for enhancing maritime cooperation and interoperability among key regional partners.
