The UPSC interview is a Personality Test, not a quiz or an oratory competition. Confidence and composure grow from thorough preparation of the Detailed Application Form (DAF), current affairs, graduation subjects, optional subject and issues relevant to public service.

How should you prepare?

Identify likely areas from your DAF and prepare them comprehensively. Follow reliable newspapers and authoritative discussions, form balanced views on major issues and attend sufficient mock interviews to improve clarity and composure.

Personality and grooming

Good etiquette, honesty, integrity, fairness, empathy, sensitivity and willingness to accept responsibility matter more than artificial polish. Answers should reflect a balanced personality and respect for differing viewpoints.

What type of questions are asked?

The board usually conducts a cordial, purposeful conversation. Follow-up questions develop from the candidate's answers, so listen carefully, answer the question asked and avoid unnecessary claims that invite confusion.

Must every question be answered?

No. If you genuinely do not know, say so politely and move on without losing composure. The quality, originality and clarity of the answers you do give are more important than guessing.

Are excellent communication skills essential?

Fluent or ornamental speech is not required. Clear thinking, sound knowledge, alertness, balance of mind and honest communication are more valuable. Speak naturally, remain respectful and present a reasoned opinion.
